ME/CFS - What is it?
CFS stands for Chronic Fatigue Syndrome (also known as Myalgic Encephalomyelitis - ME/CFS). It is a complex disorder characterized by persistent, severe fatigue that is not relieved by sleep or rest and that significantly affects daily life.
Symptoms
The most common symptoms of ME/CFS include
- Extreme fatigue that is not improved by sleep or rest
- Concentration disorders and memory problems ("brain fog")
- Sleep disorders
- Muscle pain and joint pain
- Headache
- Sensitivity to light and noise
- Dizziness or drowsiness
- Worsening of symptoms after physical or mental exertion (post-exertional malaise)
The exact cause of ME/CFS is not yet fully understood. However, it is thought that a combination of genetic, infectious, immunological and psychological factors may play a role. There is currently no cure for ME/CFS, but treatment focuses on alleviating symptoms, e.g. through pain management, sleep management and stress management strategies.
